For this week’s LYM, we have a very talented guitarist & my cousin, Camille! Camille shares how she got into playing guitar and how she’s using the gift of music to uplift and inspire people around her. Being considered a Swiftie (huge Taylor Swift fan), Camille often covers her songs. (Check out her beautiful covers of “Cornelia Street” and “Cruel Summer” and “Shake It Off” below).
“I want to play or create music that sends an important message to myself and to other people, to give them something when things are really great, or when things aren’t.”
Who is Camille? Tell us about yourself…
My name is Camille Gesmundo. I’m 23 years old and from the Philippines. I love buying books (which will be stuck in my bookshelf for months, probably a year or more, before actually reading them). I am fascinated by wolves, and I love Midnight. My favorite colors are all shades of blue, but sometimes it’s yellow and sometimes it’s black. I guess it depends on my mood. I’m at my happiest when I’m surrounded by nature, or when it’s raining.
When did you first learn how to play the guitar and what inspired you to do so??
I started playing guitar by learning the song “Fearless” when I was 14. I dreamed about being able to play since I was 12 years old especially because a lot of people from our school were musically inclined. They would bring guitars and play songs during our break time, and I thought how it would be cool if I could did it as well. I also had a best friend back then who plays the instrument and we had similar taste in music. Because of that I was encouraged, then searched different websites and books for guitar chords and began to experiment with it.
Name a couple of your favorite songs to play...
Since I’m a Swiftie, I love to play a lot of Taylor Swift’s songs, new and old, such as Cornelia Street, Cruel Summer, Ours, Stay Stay Stay, Sparks Fly, Style, Dear John and a lot more! But other than that, my current favorites are “Iris” by Goo Goo dolls, “Maybe the Night” by Ben and Ben, and “My heart” by Paramore. I play certain songs when it “speaks” to me, regardless of its release date. Music is timeless.
Who are your top 3 musical influences?
These would be Taylor Swift, the BeeGees, and James Taylor. I just love their style. Their music is unique, meaningful, and also very pleasant to listen to especially on a rainy day..
What has been the most rewarding and also the most challenging thing about playing guitar?
Playing the guitar while singing allows me to express my self. When I encounter a song that I can relate to, I play it for days. It’s also very satisfying when I get to strum hard and sing at the top of my lungs. I feel the music and everything else fades. It’s just me and my guitar. It’s also very rewarding when people can relate to and appreciate what you’re doing.
The challenging thing about this is that it’s hard to learn at first. You have to stay determined and motivated until you can do it and never listen to those who say you can’t.
If there was anyone who you could collaborate and play music with, who would it be and why?
Taylor Swift, of course! That has been my dream since I started playing! Haha. But also, I would love to collaborate with some of my friends. They are very talented!
Do you play any other instruments and or have any other talents??
I’m still trying to learn the piano. Hopefully I’ll become better at that soon! I’ve also written a few simple songs. Sometimes there would be something inside my mind playing on repeat. I would grab my guitar, play random chords and play with words until I turn it into a song.
What role do you have in society and/or how do you wish to contribute?
I want to play or create music that sends an important message to myself and to other people, to give them something when things are really great, or when things aren’t. I also wish to use my talents for a good cause someday, especially to help and motivate the young ones.
Explain a time where you’ve used talents to inspire the community and how do you hope to keep doing so?
I used my gift of music to entertain people and make them feel uplifted. I have inspired some to pursue their dream despite being discouraged by others. Also, I remember someone who used my music to get through a really bad time and I was glad I could help her somehow.
Lastly, what is the best piece advice you can give in life?
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, FACE YOUR FEARS. I know this one is pretty common and simple but I think this is important. Another one is TRUST YOUR INTUITION. This one has helped me a lot.
